TIMING AND RESULTS
ChampionChip® timing will be used for all races. Official results and all awards will be based on your Gun Time as in the past. Your unofficial Chip Time (net time on the course) will be listed for personal logs and PRs on the day of race. All runners must attach the Chip as instructed or they will not be timed and ineligible for any award. Results will be posted adjacent the Finish Line and at lajollamarathon.com
RACE NUMBER AND TIMING CHIP
Inside your Race Packet you should find a Race Number (Bib) and Timing Chip. Examine the label on the bottom portion of your Bib for accuracy. If you find any discrepancies, please contact the Half Marathon office at 858-454-0777. Prior to the race start, attach the Bib to the FRONT of your shirt and secure the Timing Chip to your shoe laces with the supplied "zip tie" or Velcro strap as shown in the photo. Runners crossing the start line or entering the finish area without the Timing Chip attached as instructed will not be timed and will be disqualified from receiving any award.
CARBO DINNER
All participants are invited to a pre-race Carbo Dinner on Saturday night (April 26) at Washington Mutual, 7777 Girard Ave, between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Your Bib is required for admission. Guest tickets may be purchased at the door for $5.00. Packet pick-up will also be available at the Dinner.
THE START
Shuttles to the Start: Shuttles will begin departing at 5:00 am from the Finish Line area (La Jolla Cove) to the Half Marathon Start area (Del Mar). THE LAST BUS DEPARTS AT 6:30 am.
Warm Up Clothing: Warm ups worn to the start may be deposited with a Clothing Control Volunteer for return transportation to the finish area. Your Bib is your claim ticket. Do not place money or valuables in your bag, as we can not be responsible for any loss.
Race Start: Due to the large field, all runners should be in the start area by 7:00 am. Staging and the pre-race meeting will begin at 7:10 am. Prior to the start, please attach your Bib securely to the FRONT of your shirt and the Timing Chip to your shoe. Runners should line up according to their anticipated pace. Remember, NO CHIP - NO TIME!
STROLLERS, ROLLERBLADES, HEADPHONES, PETS AND BICYCLES ARE PROHIBITED.
THE COURSE
Several bicyclists will lead runners and split times will be announced at each mile marker. The course is clearly marked with traffic cones, chalked arrows and course guides at each questionable turn. Except when otherwise directed by a course guide or police officer, please run as close to the right hand curb as possible. Running outside the cones is a genuine personal safety hazard and could jeopardize the future of this race. You are encouraged to shout at people who are not within the cones. This course has several major hills (up and down) and some areas where footing may be difficult. Runners should use extreme caution in these areas. Significant efforts have been made to reduce any danger to an absolute minimum, however, since the course runs along many streets which carry normal traffic, runners must take more than casual precautions to ensure their safety. If you become sick or injured, stay along the course, a sag wagon will follow the last runner. Aid stations are located at strategic points along the course. Water and a sport drink will be available at each station. Note: The course will open to normal traffic progressively from the start based on an 11 min / mile pace.
THE FINISH
Race Time clocks will be suspended above the finish line and will display your unofficial Gun Time. In addition, your (average) course Pace will be displayed to your right as you cross the finish line. Results will be posted adjacent the finish line as available and updated continually. The results will list both your Gun Time (the official time used for awards and all official records) and your Chip Time (your unofficial net course time used only for personal logs and PR's). After crossing the finish line, you must proceed directly to the timing chip collection area, remove your timing chip, and hand to one of the chip collectors.
AFTER THE RACE
Shuttles: Post Race Shuttles begin departing the Cove at 9:30 am. Buses will run back to the Half Marathon and 5K starts until 11:30 am.
Post Race Celebration: After the race, runners and striders will be greeted by an eclectic display of food and drink including a Beer Garden for participants over 21. At 10:00 am the awards celebration and opportunity race number drawing will begin. Over $5000 in prizes will be awarded to those in attendance. Your Bib is your number for the prize drawings held during the awards ceremonies. You must be present to win. All prizes will be awarded. Note: Picture identification is required for admission to the beer garden.
AWARDS
LJHM Medals are awarded to the top five finishers in each age class. In addition, the top five male and female Open and Masters division finishers overall receive: $250 (1st), $100 (2nd), $75 (3rd), $50 (4th) and $25 (5th). Championship trophies will be awarded to the first Open division male and Open division female finishers overall. $500 will also be awarded to the first male and female who break the course record set in 1994 by Mark Donuhue (1:06:39) and in 1990 by Erin Baker (1:16:52).
T-SHIRTS AND SOUVENIRS
Your Bib is also your claim ticket for your T-shirt and any souvenir items you ordered and prepaid. T-shirts and prepaid souvenirs can not be mailed (as stated on the entry form). T-shirts and souvenirs may be picked up at the Saturday Expo, April 26, at Washington Mutual (7777 Girard Avenue) between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm, or on Sunday, April 27 (race day), adjacent to the finish line.
